Pint & Politics on Proportional Representation - an account by Salli Martlew

Pint and Politics at the Black Horse.

In our last Newsletter I left you with the question 'How democratic is your vote?' Last night in our Pint and Politics at the Black Horse we went a long way to answering it.

Members, friends and visitors brought thoughts and opinions from Barnsley, Harrogate and even the German perspective. We had a cracking evening discussing the many issues around Proportional Representation and Electoral Reform. Stimulating and entertaining. If you weren't there, you missed a treat.

One strand emerged. On the information we have, none of our 4 MPs support PR. You could contact and ask your MP where they stand and say the current parliamentary situation is crying out for a reform of the voting system. Come the next general election they need to have a response to this in their Party Manifesto.

Here's what we know of their stance. I would be very interested to hear how they respond to your question on it. Remember to provide your name and postcode in any correspondence.

Normanton Pontefract Castleford - Labour - Yvette Cooper - undecided
"Personally, I believe that any system needs to retain some kind of constituency or local link to ensure that every corner of the country has a strong enough voice.".

Wakefield - Labour - Mary Creagh MP has no official commitment on voting systems

Morley Outwood - Conservative - Andrea Jenkyns - opposer "[Voted against PR, Dec 2015]"

Hemsworth - Labour - Jon Trickett - undecided
"The first principle of democracy is equality: everyone should be equal at the ballot box."

By the way, make sure you, your family and friends, are all signed up to vote in May. It's important.
